Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) Hair Transplant
FUE is the blueprint method on which modifications have accumulated over the years. Let’s first discuss it and then outline the most widely used modifications on it.
FUE Steps
- During an FUE, the surgeon plans and applies local anesthesia to the donor area of which the follicles are to be extracted. This area may be chosen on the sides or the back of the head, on the beard, or on various parts of the body (as suits the client and the surgeon’s plan).
- After, the surgeon extracts follicular units (each unit comprises 1-4 hair follicles) using punch excisions and then classifies them for easier transplantation.
- Then, the surgeon carefully makes channel incisions in the thin or balding area and loads the extracted grafts with a similar fashion to the natural-looking pattern, angle, and direction of the surrounding hair.
This process is done under careful precision, as the follicles are delicate and can reduce the success rate of the procedure if they are handled poorly during the extraction or the loading of the grafts. FUE has a superb recovery time. Most importantly, no damage occurs to the donor area; its appearance stays the same, no matter how many grafts are taken from it. It is a totally safe procedure and leaves no scars, unlike older methods.

Several methods can be used to process the grafts before they get implanted. The Ice FUE differs from the classic FUE in that the follicular units used are processed with a solution and kept in a very low temperature to keep them cool during the procedure, maximizing the survival rate of the follicles outside the body and thus adding to the success of an already amazing procedure.

A modern modification in the way the surgeon makes incisions is using sharper sapphire blades other than the steel ones used in classic FUE. Loading Grafts
Direct hair implantation (DHI)
Korean scientists developed a pen-like device to aid the surgeons with the loading of the grafts into the balding area. This pen-like device, called Choi implanter, is used to make the channel incisions and load the grafts at the same time, providing faster and more efficient implantation and way less destruction of the follicles.
The most prominent advantage of DHI is the time modification: grafts spend less time outside the body, thus improving their survival rate and the overall success of the procedure. Moreover, the recipient site in a DHI doesn’t even need to be shaved and magnificent results can be seen much earlier than the classic FUE.
